Transformation optics presents a methodology that
will enable an entirely new class of structures capable of controlling
and manipulating incident electromagnetic radiation in surprising ways.
This new approach involves the mathematical transformation of a coordinate
system into relative space. In the case of the cloak, the transformation
creates a "void" in space where any object may reside undetected.

With the advent of metamaterials providing new
parameter space, it is now practical to achieve these transformations
using the spatial variation of electromagnetic material properties.
